What does a new baby need?

A new baby's initial wardrobe, also known as a layette, is something every parent thinks about. What will my new baby really need? A new baby needs less than you may think. Babies grow amazingly fast, so all those adorable tiny outfits will soon be outgrown. With that said, there are a few essentials.

Remember for the first ten days, the umbilical cord stump will still be attached. So you'll want clothing that is looser around the middle, like gowns and t-shirts. You'll also be changing a lot of diapers the first few weeks, so you'll want quick access.

It's also nice to have a few cute outfits. You'll want at least one for the picture in the hospital. If you plan to have people over to visit the baby in the first few weeks, you'll also want a few outfits for then. You probably will be too tired to go anywhere for a little while!

It's always good to have some nongender specific outfits. If you haven't found out the gender of the baby through an ultrasound, green and yellow sleepers are always a good choice. Even if you did find out, mistakes are occasionally made! Have a few neutral outfits just in case.

Once the baby is a little bigger, you can start moving away from the t-shirts. Onesies are good for under the clothes, especially during the winter. Little sleeper pajamas with feet are also very cute! I always tried to stay away from socks, as my little ones never kept them on.

The most important item you need is diapers! You'll need to decide whether you want to use disposable or cloth. They make very nice cloth diapers with velcro tabs now, but they are more expensive initially. However, you do save money over the two years your child will use them.

These are a necessity the first 10 days.  I would have at least 3-5 because they will get spit up on and messy.

Gowns

Gowns were also very nice in the first few weeks. They look cute, and make it easy to do a quick diaper change. You do need socks with these. If your baby is wiggly, they have a tendency to ride up, so make sure to get the type that are gathered at the bottom.  Five is the most you should need.

Cute Outfits!

Every baby needs a few cute outfits! Even if you don't go anywhere for a little while, it's nice to dress your baby up just to admire him or her. Make sure to have at least one for the hospital photo.

Plus, having something cute for your baby to wear will just cheer you up and remind you why you went through the entire process of being pregnant and giving birth.  Believe me, you'll need it!

Sleepers and Onesies

Once your baby is a little bit bigger, you can dress them in sleepers and onesies. These were my favorite baby clothes. They're inexpensive, easy to wash, and easy to change. Plus, there's no socks to lose!  We had seven of these.

Diapers

Cloth or disposable, you'll definitely need some diapers! If you get cloth, try to get adjustable ones that cover several sizes. A newborn will need 8 -10 diapers a day. For disposable diapers, you'll only need one or two boxes of newborn sized diapers. A baby will grow out of that size within a month.  Some babies won't wear the newborn size at all.  Plus, you will get some diapers at the hospital that should last a day or two.

I really want to say thank you for the suggestion of neutral colored outfits. When we had our first two daughters, we were told on both occasions to buy blue. The second time around we were smart enough to go neutral and then when we had our third daughter we didn't even bother to find out the sex!

Isn't that funny. Live and learn I suppose. Your welcome. I was always afraid of the "mistakes" made you mentioned in this article, so I played it safe and was always glad I did. I think too much of any "color" would have gotten to me in the end anyway. Great idea about the hospital picture outfit, by the way. I wouldn't have thought of that.
